Authors: Stephen Brook, Hugh Johnson, Michael Broadbent, Joanna Simon, and Tom Stevenson
Average review score:

A Great Gift for Wine Lovers
I originally intended to give this book to my uncle for his 65th birthday, but when I started leafing through it, I found myself completely drawn in. An incredible lineup of wine writers have contributed to this book, making for some truly fascinating reading on the history of wine. I kept a copy for myself, and bought another one for my uncle (who told me he much preferred it to the ties and golf paraphrenalia he received...!)

Changing Paris: A Tour Along the Seine
Published in Paperback by Arena Editions (10 December, 2001)
Authors: Diane Johnson, Pierre Borhan, Thomas Mellins, and Philip Trager
Average review score:

An outstanding photographic documentary of modern Paris.
This photographic survey of the Seine examines the structures and spaces of Paris, focussing on the architectural styles of the city and examining both old and new sites. Changing Paris is an artistic rendering of Paris architecture which could also have been featured in our 'art' section but deserves mention here also as a special documentary of modern Paris.

CHARACTER ABOVE ALL VOLUME 7 ROBERT DALLEK ON LYNDON JOHNSON AND HENDRIK HERTZBE
Published in Audio Cassette by Simon & Schuster (Audio) (September, 1996)
Authors: Robert Dallek, Hendrik Hertzberg, and Robert Anton Wilson
Average review score:

Johnson and Carter
This product features two audio tapes. One each on Johnson and Carter. Robert Dallek and Hendrik Hertzberg are the speakers. Their speeches from 1995 show great knowledge and insight into their respective Presidents.

Hendrik Hertzberg was a speech writer for President Carter during his last two years in office. Hertzberg is a good speaker and often used humor to describe Carter and his administration. Hendrik describes Carter well. He portrays him as a loner and someone opposed to pomp and glitter. He also stated that Carter was no idealogue. Rather he handled issues one by one as they arose. And he spread himself too thin. Hendrik descibes some of the major events of the Carter Administration. The Panama Canal Treaty, the Israeli/Egyptian peace talks and the failed Iranian hostage rescue mission. Hertzberg portrays Carter as a courageous moral leader. But he also shows that Carter was not a great political leader.

Robert Dallek is a successful author and he shows here that he is also a good speaker. Dallek studied Lyndon Johnson thoroughly and clearly understood him. He states accurately that Lyndon Johnson was a complex man with a seemingly contradictory personality. Dallek quotes several stories about Johnson to show his sense of humor and his temperament.

Dallek provides data about Johnson's popularity over the years. As President, his approval ratings were good. As an ex President he's less popular. Dallek gives three reasons why he thinks LBJ's popularity has fallen. His assessment is probably correct.

Dallek then proceeds to rate Johnson as a President. He gives LBJ high marks in the realms of vision, pragmatism and consensus building on domestic issues. And he states that Johnson was very successful in passing his bills through Congress. Dallek provides a whole list of good bills which Johnson pushed through. In summary, Robert Dallek's assessment of Lyndon Johnson and his Presidency is very accurate and well informed.

Characterological Transformation : The Hard Work Miracle

Author: Stephen M. Johnson
Average review score:

A unique integration of psychotherapy approaches
As a graduate student in social work, I found this book enormously helpful in understanding how to integrate various psychotherapy approaches in professional practice. I checked this book out of the library so many times, I finally bought the book. His methods of how to facilitate personality growth in clients helped me understand myself in new and helpful ways. I feel I have grown tremendously from reading and digesting this book. Psychotherapy of the kind he writes about is truly a "hard work miracle"!

Put Bruce Lombardo on the shelf next to Edwin Waye Teale..
Put Bruce Lombardo's "Chew Toy of the Gnat Gods" on the shelf right next to Edwin Waye Teale's "seasonal" nature books....but not until after you have had a great time reading this charming account of a year's observation of wildlife on the Southeast coast of the US. It's a must read for those of us who love the Georgia and South Carolina coast...and for those who have yet to discover the delights of this area.

Chihuly Baskets
Published in Hardcover by Portland Pr (October, 1994)
Authors: Dale Chihuly, Linda Norden, Murray Morgan, and Diana Johnson
Average review score:

not just beautiful glass, beautiful photos...
This is the best book of Chihuly works that I have seen. (I will assume some familiarity with the work of Dale Chihuly). Not only are the photos taken of my favourite Chihuly glassworks (the baskets), but the photos themselves are incredible. The photographer responsible for this book is incredible. The photos give a real impression of what it is like to see Chihuly glass live (and for anyone who hasn't, it is truly stunning to see). The baskets seem to be flexible in these photos, and not frozen, lifeless glass.

The book includes a section of photos of actual baskets that inspired Chihuly. Although this section was less exciting for me, my fiancée found this part educational, it gave her an idea of what the artist had in mind when creating the glassworks. While the book is a bit expensive, when you see the size of these incredible photos, you will think it is worth it. My only complaint is that there could have been a few more photos.
